Taking Chances is not without its daring moments–we’ll get to those–but the first order of business in any review of this much-hyped record, on which Celine Dion is said to have slunk away from her songbird instincts in favor of embracing her inner rock & roll wild child, should be fan reassurance. Therefore: fear not. Taking Chances has its share of poignant, pretty ballads (both “A Song for You” and “Right Next to the Right One” are goosebump-raisers) and love songs (the hopeful, heartfelt title track, which unfolds into an anthemic power ballad midway through, may be the best one). As far as standard Celine fare goes, in fact, Chances is likely her strongest non-French outing since 2002′s A New Day Has Come; nobody unfolds a lyric with more care or nuance. And, as the subtle “My Love” deftly proves, any early-career instincts to over-sing have gone poof along with her ’90s-era, sweet-natured-kook persona. Because it’s a generous 16 songs long, it may even be possible to ignore the non-Celine-like moments on Taking Chances and just enjoy the more fan-faithful tracks. But that wouldn’t be any fun, would it? There are songs here–”Can’t Fight the Feelin’,” “Fade Away,” “That’s Just the Woman In Me”–that will astound diehards and make fans of those who’ve dissed her for more than a decade. If you didn’t think the diva behind Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” had it in her to screech from the bottom of her soul, a la Janis Joplin, flip to track 15 and guess again. –Tammy La Gorce

A hilarious comedy starring Mike Myers as guru Pitka in his first original character since the blockbuster hit Austin Powers. Finally an opportunity comes his way: If he can heal the rift between a star hockey player (Romany Marco, Weeds) and his wife (Meagan Good, Stomp the Yard), he can appear on Oprah. But when he meets the hockey team’s comely owner (Jessica Alba), Pitka realizes he must solve his own love problems as well. Myers can’t resist a good bodily functions joke–unfortunately, he can’t resist a bad one either, so The Love Guru is crammed top to bottom with jokes about urine, feces, sex, genitalia–lots and lots about male genitalia–along with many, many gags about Canada, drugs, elephants, inspirational catchphrases, and little people (Vern “Mini-Me” Troyer takes the brunt of these). But the Austin Powers movies were pretty much the same sort of lowbrow comedy grab-bag; though the ratio of good to bad might be weaker here, a good handful of bits offer solid laughs, including some mock-Bollywood musical numbers. Also featuring pop star Justin Timberlake (as a preposterously well-endowed French-Canadian), Ben Kingsley (as Pitka’s cross-eyed mentor), Stephen Colbert (as a drug-addled sports announcer), as well as numerous celebrity cameos. –Bret Fetzer

At his best, director John Woo turns action movies into ballets of blood and bullets grounded in character drama. Face/Off marks Woo’s first American film to reach the pitched level of his best Hong Kong work (Hard-Boiled). He takes a patently absurd premise–hero and villain exchange identities by literally swapping faces in science-fiction plastic surgery–and creates a double-barreled revenge film driven by the split psyches of its newly redefined characters. FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) must play the villain to move through the underworld while psychotic terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage) becomes a perversely paternal family man while using every tool at his disposal to destroy his nemesis. Travolta vamps Cage’s tics and flamboyant excess with the grace of a dancer after his transformation from cop to criminal, while Cage plays the sullen, bottled-up agent excruciatingly trapped behind the face of the man who killed his son. His attempts to live up to the terrorist’s reputation become cathartic explosions of violence that both thrill and terrify him. This is merely icing on the cake for action fans, the dramatic backbone for some of the most visceral action thrills ever. Woo fills the screen with one show-stopping set piece after another, bringing a poetic grace to the action freakout with sweeping camerawork and sophisticated editing. Another of those cut-and-paste comedies from Adam Sandler’s production company starring one of Sandler’s erstwhile Saturday Night Live colleagues, The Adventures of Joe Dirt finds the magnificently caustic David Spade emasculated by a sentimental script and shapeless, haphazard cutting. Spade plays the title character, a white-trash orphan in search of the parents who abandoned him at the Grand Canyon. The humor is supposed to come from Joe’s misadventures, his redneck gullibility, and his encounters with such figures as a serial killer, a wacked-out janitor (Christopher Walken), and a lovable gal (Jamie Pressly) who may, unfortunately, turn out to be his sister. But the squishier requirements of the story, requiring the audience to feel deeply for the pain of Spade’s caricature, are an irritant and force Spade to veer from the nastier stuff he does so well. Here’s a model for adapting a novel into a movie. The bestseller by James Jones, a frank and hard-hitting look at military life, could not possibly be made into a film in 1953 without considerably altering its length and bold subject matter. Yet screenwriter Daniel Taradash and director Fred Zinnemann (both of whom won Oscars for their work) pared it down and cleaned it up, without losing the essential texture of Jones’s tapestry. The setting is an army base in Hawaii in 1941. Montgomery Clift, in a superb performance, plays a bugler who refuses to fight for the company boxing team; he has reasons for giving up the sport. His refusal results in harsh treatment from the company commander, whose bored wife (Deborah Kerr) is having an affair with the tough-but-fair sergeant (Burt Lancaster). You remember–the scene with the two of them embracing on the beach, as the surf crashes in. The supporting players are as good as the leads: Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed won Oscars (and Sinatra revitalized his entire career), and Ernest Borgnine entered the gallery of all-time movie villains, as the stockade sergeant who makes Sinatra miserable. Zinnemann’s work is efficient but also evocative, capturing the time and place beautifully, the tropical breezes as well as the lazy prewar indulgence. This one is deservedly a classic. –Robert Horton
